This past weekend I had the joy of doing one thing all geeks love to do. I played a video game. Yep. That’s it. I made it through the first 5 Chapters of Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of a New World. It wasn’t just that though. There was more to it. The things that happened this weekend just added to the excitement.
This weekend, while procrastinators thought out their tax strategies, I was lounging on the couch leveling my characters and basking in the glow of my Wii. To be honest, the Tales series is up there with my love of Zelda and Dragon Quest. RPGs are great. And this one is up there.
But beyond that I got to watch some baseball and there was a ton of Titanic history all over the place. Although, I was despondent to find out there were people out there that didn’t know it wasn’t just a movie. I really weep for the future. Also, there was a brawl with a little hockey in between when the Penguins and Flyers took to the ice.
But back to the game. I have to give you the the best quotes from the game thus far.
First, there is the zen mantra of the main character, which he is told by another character (no spoilers here), “Courage is the magic that turns dreams into reality.” I really like that one. It makes me think I need to grab a bunch of books on Zen and Self-Help and start writing for an RPG.
Here are the rest in no particular order:
“Calm yourselves. Otherwise you will be blind to everything including the truth.”
“This doesn’t look good. That monster is blind with rage.”
(I laughed when I heard it.)
“They say dreams where you die are good luck.”
(I’ve heard that one before.)
“How can we go on a quest to regenerate the world if we can’t even save the people standing right in front of us?!” (A fairly respectable statement, and it’s a carry over from Tales of Symphonia.)
“Too cold one minute and too hot the next. Human beings are very inconvenient.”
“Unnecessary speech only betrays one’s faults.”
And with that last one, I’ll leave you…
*Also, when I finish the game, I’ll be posting a review.
