Netflix’s Mercury 13 is A Wonderful Look At the Women Who Almost Became America’s First in Space

Netflix’s Mercury 13 is A Wonderful Look At the Women Who Almost Became America’s First in Space

“Most harmful behavior is based in fear. Protecting one’s perceived position in society, protecting one’s territory, or one’s physical well-being. But progress is inevitable.”

That’s the opening quote from Netflix’s original documentary on 13 women known as “Mercury 13” who could have become America’s first women in space. But at that time it wasn’t meant to be, and that’s the compelling part of the story.

Generation X Tales for an Accerated Culture by Douglas Coupland

Appreciating Coupland’s Generation X Takes Time, Life Experience

I have a confession to make. When I took my first crack at Douglas Coupland’s Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture, I didn’t get very far.

It was a suggested read from a friend, so I bought it. I read 35 pages and then, for some reason, never finished the book. Fast forward to this year: I read Microserfs, also by Douglas Coupland, and ended up falling in love with his writing style.

18 Holes with Tin Cup

18 Holes with Tin Cup

Tin Cup is one of those rare romantic comedies that can get away with being called a “sports film,” which is why it transcends the rom-com genre and is just a great well-balanced movie that teaches you about the mental hurdles of relationships and golf.

If you could get in a time machine and ask me in my 7-year old wisdom, what the best album of all time was, I would have easily answered Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles “Coming Out of Our Shells,” without hesitation. Seriously, the album was my jam back in the day.

Though much lamented on the internet with any google search for “Coming Out of Our Shells” now, I view this gem very differently. Let’s be honest here, I was 7 when this was released and it was my jam!

Ready Player One Is a Great Film (The Slight Spoiler Review with Old Man Rant)

Ready Player One Movie Review

Ready Player One is an amazing film. It’s fun, it’s filled with pop culture references, and it follows the book as much as a film can. But it’s not the book, which does not surprise me, and you should read the book, and you should also go see the film. What follows in this review is just the old man rant, that I had to get out of my system, and one that is kinda pointless because I did love the film.

Now, I attempted to go into this film with an open mind, which is how you need to view such things as movies based upon books that you love.
